![]() Not pictured are the characters that Joel doesn’t own yet (and are not in my crazy collection): Slimestone, Stoneheart and a few other villains. These are all pictured as well (in the third and fourth photo). His minions include Brimstone (who wields a mean battle-axe), Tombstone, and Styx-and-Stones (a two-headed monstrosity). On the side of evil is the aforementioned Magmar. On the side of the good guys in the Rock Lord battle are the following individuals: Boulder, Crackpot, Granite, Nuggit, Marbles and Pulver-Eyes, to name a few (all-pictured). Are they robots? Biological organisms? What? Joel has settled firmly on the idea that they are robots…made of that “ powerful living rock.” What seems indeterminate to me (though not Joel…) is what exactly these rock lords are when they aren’t rocks. In a four-year old world, it makes perfect, even cunning sense. As normal-looking rocks, they’re good stealth warriors, I suppose. For instance, the Rocklords transform into harmless rocks in our garden, in our flower bed, under trees, etc., and then spring into action against the bad guys. First, he loves transforming them they’re great puzzles to further develop his small motor skills.Īnd secondly, Joel has no problem landing his action figures in creative situations. At first blush, that sounds highly uninteresting and totally lacking in creativity, but Joel loves these critters with a passion. Now, unlike Transformers or GoBots, these Rocklords don’t actually transform into vehicles…they transform into… rocks. Margot Kidder voiced the Rock Lord queen, Solitaire, and Roddy McDowall played Nuggit, the sort of R2D2 of this particular franchise. In 1986, specifically, there was an animated feature film called GoBots: Battle of the Rock Lords (1986) and it involved the GoBot Guardians protecting “ powerful living rocks” from the likes of Cy-Kill and the leader of the evil rocklord s, named Magmar (and voiced by Telly Savalas). These action-figures are a spin-off from Bandai’s and Tonka’s successful GoBots line of the mid-1980s. Joel’s latest toy obsession (after Transformers, after Kenner Superheroes, after Bakugan…) revolves around metamorphic creatures called “ Rock Lords.” Several Rock Lords also made cameos in IDW's The Transformers: Robots in Disguise #4.I write this post today in honor of my son, Joel, who will be four years old in a few short months. The Rock Lords would then go on to feature in several stories revealed in the Facebook blog Transformers: Renegade Rhetoric. They also made appearances in the 1986 film GoBots: Battle of the Rock Lords. For their appearance in Transformers Animated, the Rock Lords were originally created as an homage to the species of the same name that were featured in Tonka's GoBots' spinoff toy-line called the Rock Lords. ![]() The three smaller remaining Rock Lords that regenerated from the shattered body of the first Rock Lord didn't even stand a chance. As the Sun shone down on it, the Rock Lord went on to destroy everything in its path, only for Sari Sumdac to appear and shatter the Rock Lord into hundreds of pieces. As the Rock Lord prepared to return to sleep, it was disturbed to find itself alone on Earth. Moments later, Bumblebee had made his way outside, and was quickly devoured by the nearest Rock Lord. In the Malgus Cluster, a cluster of Rock Lords were awakened by Omega Supreme, to whom they swarmed around him. This culminated in the Combiner Wars, which involved a team-up between the Guardians and the heroic Rock Lords and the Renegades and the evil Rock Lords. The Guardians first encountered the Rock Lords during a battle with the evil Renegades, and thus, many later battles between the Guardians and Renegades involved the Rock Lords. The plan was imperfect, and nearly every Rock Lord had forgotten who they originally were. This idea was a plan to turn every living being into living rocks by having them fused with rock at the very moment the radiation wave hit. Their connection to nature and dislike of technology gave them an idea. Their main diet is metal, to which they eat anything made of metal, including robots such as Cybertronians.Įons ago, in the Gargent Cluster, a a civilization of advanced organic Ro-Beings, who were native to the planet Quartex, became threatened by the stellar radiation generated from a nearby star. This results in them changing into a humanoid shape. However, they can be awakened if disturbed by light. In their dormant states, they resemble asteroids. Rock Lords are a mineral species, whom, as their name implies, are made up entirely of rocks.
